How Old Would You Be If You Didn’t Know How Old You Are?

If we did not know our age, some of us would appear to be very young, and some of us would seem very old. Many people like to use their age as an excuse, such as, "I'm too old to start something new," or "I could never learn that at my age." Other people, though, go on to achieve their greatest accomplishments in their later years of life.

One example of a successful business man who didn’t let age stand in his way is Colonel Harland Sanders. He didn’t start franchising his chicken outlets until he was 65 years old. He traveled 250,000 miles a year visiting KFC franchises until he was 90 years old.

Here’s the way I see it: It is not important how old you are. It is what you do that is important. If you have a positive attitude and determination to succeed, age is irrelevant. Using Type as a Mask

Adobe Illustrator has a wonderful assortment of tools for adding fill colors and patterns to paths and objects. However, those fill options aren't as plentiful when it comes to adding fills to type. Workarounds for these limitations are available. One method allows you to use type as a mask to apply a gradient to your text. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Create a word or phrase of text.



  2. Use the rectangle tool to create a rectangle about the size of your text. Apply a gradient fill to this rectangle.



  3. Drag your type on top of the filled rectangle, making sure that the text is on top. (Object > Arrange > Bring to Front)



  4. Select both pieces, the type and the rectangle.

  5. Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make.

  6. Click anywhere outside your type to see the effect.

You could use this technique to create unique headlines for a newsletter, or in your company’s logo.

Promote with E-mail Signatures

In addition to identifying the sender, providing essential contact information, and establishing your credentials, e-mail signatures can be used as a marketing tool to build brand recognition, draw readers to your web site, and advertise your products and services for free.

Many e-mails that do not include signatures look suspicious and have a higher chance of being deleted. And because signatures appear at the end of messages, they are an acceptable form of promotion without being considered spam.

Here are a few key points to keep in mind when creating your e-mail signature:
  • Keep it short. Use a maximum of seven lines or less. Consider including your name and title, company name, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail and web site addresses.

  • Keep it simple. Save images and fancy graphics for your web site, since they can often increase file size and won’t always open correctly for the recipient.

  • Spell out web sites. Don’t count on an html signature to work every time. Instead of using a hyperlink that says click here, use http://www.microsoft.com. This also enables recipients to easily copy and paste into a browser or contact card.

  • Use simple fonts and colors that are easy to read.

  • Standardize e-mail signatures throughout your company to create a consistent brand image throughout multiple contacts.

  • Consider including a promotional twist. You can add an offer for a free report, sample or product; a free consultation or trial offer; a company announcement (new client, new product, award won, etc.); a hyperlink to your latest press release, article, or web site feature; or an invitation to subscribe to your free e-newsletter.
Remember, e-mail signatures are very flexible, and the few extra seconds it takes to tailor your signature to meet the expectations of your audience may prove very valuable.

While the mouse is still one of the greatest inventions in computer history, it can actually slow you down. Here are a few easy keyboard shortcuts to help you save time and become more efficient by jumping between multiple windows - e-mail, instant messaging, web browser, and other programs - without even taking your hands off the keyboard.
  • To minimize a window in your task bar... ALT, SPACEBAR, N
  • To restore a window so it fills your desktop... ALT, SPACEBAR, X
  • To restore a window visibly without taking up your entire desktop...
    ALT, SPACEBAR, R
  • To close a window... ALT+F4
  • To switch to the previous window you had open... ALT+TAB
  • To switch to any window… hold down the ALT key and press TAB until the window you want is active.

Shopping List Notepads

Are you looking for a promotional item that is also useful? Give your customers and prospects a custom-printed shopping list notepad. Not only are they helpful for your customers, but they are a great way to keep your contact information at their fingertips.

In addition to including standard logo and contact information, shopping list notepads can be personalized to include a tagline, photo, or short feature product information. Just be sure to leave plenty of open space so they are usable for the recipient. Want to be sure they are used? Include a magnet on the back of the pad so they can be hung on a fridge.

To add a thoughtful touch, consider providing a contact page toward the last page of the notepad so the recipient can call or e-mail to request a replacement shopping list notepad.
